Sample Academic Kindergarten Goals
- Know all consonants and vowels and their sounds.
- Be able to sound out simple one-vowel words.
- Be able to recognize sight words—is, on, the, a, to, from, of and I.
- Be able to correctly write first and last name.
- Understand the concept of opposites.
- Understand the concept of rhyming.
- Understand the concept of alliteration.
- Understand the concept of homonyms.
- Be able to count by 1s, 5s and 10s to 100.
- Be able to identify numbers that come right before/after a given number.
- Be able to write from 1 to 100 in sequence.
- Be able to write numbers from 1 to 100 as they are dictated out of sequence.
- Be able to identify the greater of two numbers from 1 to 100.
- Understand place value—singles (ones), tens, and hundreds.
- Understand the concepts of addition and subtraction.
- Understand how to add and subtract numbers 0 to10.
- Recognize the coins—penny, nickel, dime, and quarter.
- Know the values of penny, nickel, dime and quarter.
- Read an analog clock on the hour and half hour (12:00, 12:30, 1:00, 1:30, 2:00, etc.)
- Know right and left.
- Create patterns using numbers, letters, colors, and shapes.
- Understand a variety of simple science concepts: heat rises, magnets attract and repel, oil and water do not mix, static electricity, solid/liquid/gas, metamorphosis, spatial awareness, etc.)
- Demonstrate an expanded vocabulary.
